Curriculum - Year at a Glance

This page is designed to help parents know what knowledge is taught, and the order it is taught in, for each subject across the school year.  We have tried to keep these overviews simple and can be used in conjunction with the red dot sheets below.  These overviews can be used in a variety of ways to support learning, such as giving conversations points over dinner, "You're doing the Solar System in Science, tell me something about it."  Equally they can support with pre-learning and revision, and can be given to tutors where relevant.

In 2021 we introduced Essential Skills and Knowledge sheets at the start of every unit across each subject.  This was a massive task involving many staff hours that allowed our team to revisit their curriculum sequencing, and pull out essential knowledge that students need in order to progress.  The results of this work are available to parents below to give you the information about your child's topic.

In October 2022 the staff team reviewed the essential skills and knowledge sheets during some training on metacognition.  From this we have begun to update the essential skills and knowledge sheets to become 'Essential Knowledge and Vocabulary' sheets (EKVs).  These are known as 'Red Dot Sheets' to many of our students due to the memory hook of a red dot on each one.  This change allows us to focus on subject specific language, and provides a clear scaffold for framing knowledge.  They also allow students to engaging with where the knowledge they are about to learn builds upon previous knowledge, and where, in turn, the knowledge will be relied upon in the future.

The new Essential Knowledge & Vocabulary sheets will replace the older essential knowledge and skills sheets on this website at the end of the academic year.  Staff are rewriting the EKVs throughout the year and this is quite a mammoth task, especially for a small school.  Whilst the sheets below are not our current model, they do allow you, as parents, to see what your child is doing in each term, in each subject and in each topic.
